Interviewer : Siri Tari (Dance Series) is very well-known and popular. Why did you change to Topeng?
Yusof Ghani : Topeng (Mask Series) was conceived and initially developed during my trips to Sarawak (East Malaysia) in 1988 and 1991. I saw the masks of the Kenyah and Kayan (local tribes) at museums, "long houses" (tribal residences), and antique shops.

A local artist brought a group of foreign artists and me to those places and he talked about the rituals and the usage of masks.

I found masks interesting as they could be used as motifs in paintings to make cultural statements - about ceremony and rituals. They can also be used to preserve our slowly eroding local cultures and offer opportunities for a social commentary on human pretensions and falsehoods. We're like hiding behind masks, sometimes for good reasons and sometimes not.

The early experimentation of Topeng were mainly through sketches on canvas that I did in 1991. The initial sketches were painted based on actual masks. These were one by one half foot small pieces that I joined together to make a few compositions.

Topeng is basically expressions of faces. There are no nice images in it. It's executed as such to portray my message across.

Interviewer : You travel a great deal overseas. Are those travels for art?
Yusof Ghani : Certainly. As an artist, I find it necessary to travel to get exposure and gain new experience.

It's very inspiring to visit galleries elsewhere, meet artists from foreign lands, and also to observe different lifestyles and surroundings.

Interview with Yusof Ghani.
Interviewer : Who collects your work?
Yusof Ghani : It's interesting to note the changing profile of art collectors and art lovers in Malaysia.

In the past, we artists get corporations and V.I.P.'s appreciating and collecting our artworks.

But things are changing. I see younger people in the art scene these days. They are professionals such as lawyers, architects, designers, and also businessmen.

Interviewer : What's your future plan?
Yusof Ghani : I'd love to do more shows overseas. I'd like to play my part as an artist to help Malaysian art achieve due recognition in the international art scene.

I believe, we have a distinct message and style with our Nusantara (Malay-Indo Region) flavor of art.

Apart from that, I would also like to do something different like etching, for instance.
